I just returned from an 11-day Windstar Cruise to Alaska. Years ago after several lost and delayed bags, I vowed never to check a bag again, no matter how many days I’m away and I have kept that promise. Here are 8 tried and true packing tips for an Alaskan Cruise with Just a Carry-On.

Tip #1

Get the Laundry Package. Windstar Cruises made it easy since they offer a laundry package. I took advantage of it when I cruised Tahiti with them (again with just a carry-on) and it was the perfect solution. If you pack strategically and do laundry throughout the trip, you’ll have plenty to wear. Besides, who doesn’t like coming home with a suitcase full of clean clothes?

Tip #2

Create a Packing List. While it takes a little bit of thought, planning ahead is key. Look at your itinerary, the weather report, and how long you’ll be away.  Factor in all 3 of these and you’re on your way.

Tip #3

You’ll want to bring layers and I can’t stress this enough. The weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. We were bundled up for kayaking and 20-minutes in I was taking off my jacket. If the sun is out, you really feel the heat. On the flip side, if it’s gray and rainy you’ll feel the chill. For their kayak trips in Alaska, Windstar suits you up with waterproof pants, gloves, and a life vest.

Tip #4

Think casual because Alaska is all about experiencing the outdoors. You need not pack your best pearls and designer pumps. Puffer jackets and vests fold up to next to nothing and are perfect for this type of trip.

Tip #5

Think of your bag as prime real estate. Pack pieces that are practical and multi-purpose. Choose a simple color scheme. I always start with black. It can easily go from day to night and it travels well.

Tip #6

For this cruise to Alaska, I used compression bags. Since I brought quite a few heavier bulkier items (rain jacket, sweaters, pants) it flattened them down to nothing and made them easier to fit into my bag.

Tip #7

Speaking of bulky, wear your bigger items on the plane. I brought my waterproof Bear Paw boots and wore them en route.  I was able to disguise them under a pair of black slacks as not to look like Sasquatch, especially if you have connecting flights through airports in warmer climates.

Tip #8

Use the right bag. First, check with your airline to make sure your bag conforms with their size restrictions. My go-to bag is a 21” Delsey Expandable Spinner Carry-On. In addition, I bring a backpack to go under the seat.
