Celebrating #CabernetDay with a 2008 Aurielle Cabernet Sauvignon

This year I’m celebrating #CabernetDay with a 2008 Aurielle Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a old adage that wine gets better with age. The Aurielle is a higher end Napa Valley wine that if cellared for a few years will totally ROCK!   However, I have neither the patience nor discipline to wait for a wine to peak so I uncorked the bottle and poured it into a decanter. Just letting the wine breathe for about 20 minutes was a remarkable act of self-restraint on [...]

5 Things we love about the AC Marriott, Barcelona

AC Marriott Forum in Barcelona, Spain

After 8 ½ hours in the air (add to that long TSA lines and weather delays) you want to know that you’ll at some point soon after your arrival, have a clean and comfortable bed awaiting you.

Just a short cab ride from the airport was our host in Barcelona, the AC Marriott. We have stayed at Marriott brand hotels throughout the United States, but never in Europe. This was our first experience with AC Hotels by Marriott.

The AC brand is a lifestyle hotel brand, aimed at appealing to the design conscious, business and leisure traveler who is looking to experience the culture of the city.

    Making Burgers at Sea

Carnival Cruise Lines conspired with Food Network megastar, Guy Fieri, to open an instantly addictive eatery called Guy’s Burger Joint on the lido deck of the Carnival Sunshine. Though many cruisers just ask for a plain burger and some fries before heading over to the radical toppings bar where they create their idea of the perfect burger, there is a menu of Guy’s signature burgers that should not be ignored. During our recent Mediterranean cruise, Rick had the opportunity to [...]

  • Is living the dream impossible? We think not!

Is living the dream impossible? We think not!

Is living the dream impossible? We think not! We would like you to meet Brian and Marianne, two very inspiring friends we met on Twitter. They changed course, charted a new route and are now living their dream.

    Here’s their story ….

We are Brian and Marianne, owners of Le Couloumé and Le Fournil, our newly-refurbished vacation cottage in South West France. A couple of years ago we

    Brian and Marianne
    Brian and Marianne
decided to make a long- held dream reality: quit the stresses of commuting to London and start a new life in the French Pyrenees.

Brian, originally from Cornwall/England, is a keen road cyclist and found a cyclist’s nirvana here. He also brews a variety of beers of excellent quality, as anyone who tries them will attest, and is a talented guitarist and musician as well. Marianne, a Berliner by birth, with an inborn wanderlust, is a natural linguist speaking three and a half languages: German, English, French and a bit of Spanish. She is also passionate about vegetarian cooking, many ingredients coming from our potager, the typical French kitchen garden, where we grow a lot of our own fruit and vegetables.

Here is our story: For many years, working and living in London we had felt (like many people) that there should be more to our lives than feeling constantly exhausted by demanding, stressful jobs which left so little quality time.

Unlike many people we decided to do something about it and the desire to move to another country, either Italy or France, took hold. The much simpler life style and the slower pace of life that draw millions of people like us for their holidays was a powerful incentive to choose one of those countries to live our dream.

Bring Your Camera to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel

If you ever get to visit Nashville, Tennessee, you’re going to want to bring your camera to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Resort. The hotel was kind enough to provide us with an incredible suite that served as our base of operation while we were in town scouting the city for potential segments for Midlife Road Trip. We were so mesmerized with the variety and beauty of the foliage in property’s three enormous atriums that we actually took more pictures [...]

Travel with Purpose in National Parks this summer

What better way to vacation than to Travel with Purpose in National Parks this summer. And who better to show us how than ARAMARK Parks and Destinations.

There’s no better way to welcome warmer weather than with travel to the great outdoors. America offers vast wilderness for people to explore from the grandest of National Parks, to undisturbed forestland. If this isn’t inspiration enough to lace up your hiking boots, April is also Keep America Beautiful Month, and home to National Parks Week (April 20-26) and Earth Day (April 22). Perfect excuses to leave civilization, head out into wild and explore our great resources while leaving only foot (or hoof) prints behind.
As National Park, Forest and State Park concessioner, ARAMARK Parks and Destinations practices stewardship through its Green Thread (R) program, which ensures that all aspects of business are performed sustainably- from purchasing as much food as possible from a 100 mile radius, to composting and recycling operations that sometimes enlist volunteer vacationers to go far into the wilderness to clean up after others.

10 ways to Leverage Social Media: Dream BIG and make it Happen!

10 ways to Leverage Social Media: Dream BIG and make it Happen! We started the MidLife Road Trip almost four years. It began as a simple conversation on Twitter. We actually met on Twitter. Rick lives in Atlanta Georgia with his wife, while Sandi lives inTampa, Florida with her husband. We often joke we have almost 50 years of marriage between us but to other people. Rick was raised in the south, a true southern gentleman while Sandi grew up at a fast and furious pace in New York. Our unlikely social friendship has grown into a successful business partnership.

  • A day immersed in the arts in St. Petersburg, Florida

A day immersed in the arts in St. Petersburg, Florida

Downtown St. Petersburg is a hub of activity with its sidewalk cafes, shops, galleries, museums and green space with the third largest waterfront park in North America, making it the perfect setting for frequent art shows and concerts. Taking center stage since 1925 is the salmon-colored, elegantly imposing, Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club, a 375 room luxury resort, the only luxury resort on the west coast of Florida. I like a she-she foo-foo hotel with all the bells, whistles and amenities, especially when travelling alone and the Vinoy has it all.

Make the Vinoy your home base and you are an easy walk from some of the best museums in the area. Depending on your fitness level and whether or not you are wearing comfortable shoes, everything is within walking distance. I have a habit of wearing shoes because they’re cute and have ended up buying sneakers on just about every trip we take. My suitcase is starting to look like Footlocker. It’s pretty hot here year round so stay hydrated, there are plenty of places to stop and quench your thirst along the way.

One way you can beat the heat and humidity is to ‘step inside’ and check out some of the areas world-class museums and exhibits in downtown.

  • Welcome to Midlife Southwest Airlines!

    Welcome to Midlife Southwest Airlines!

As self-proclaimed experts, we consider 40 to be the age where midlife begins… approximately.  We don’t define midlife as the halfway point in life. Instead, we think of midlife as middle third of a long life. Midlifers are well beyond the growing pains of childhood and adolescence. They’ve rounded life’s learning curve in their 20s and 30s and are now ready to embrace who they are and begin living life to the fullest! This yeas, as midlife ambassadors, we congratulate [...]
