As professional travelers we spend a lot of time away from our homes. Verizon recently sent each of us a Canary Home Security device that allows us to monitor our homes with our smartphones from just about anywhere in the world. Of course as travelers with completely different travel styles we each had our own take the Canary but we agree that it is great home security device for the traveler.

His Way

After setting up the Canary I left the house to run a few errands and test test it out. I armed it for motion-activated recording and mobile alerts. While at the drive thru window at the bank I received an alert and was able to watch video of one of our cats entering the living room and chewing on one of our houseplants. I had been accusing the wrong cat. With a push a button on my smartphone, the Canary sounded a loud siren scaring Chloe (the culprit cat) away from the plant. With the push of another button I could have called the police but I was pretty sure they wouldn’t respond the this kind of cat burglar.

I love being able to look in on the house while I’m away. Now, I am seriously thinking of buying two more devices. I’ll put one in in the master bathroom aimed at the vanity because it seems every time I so somewhere with my wife, whether its to church or out for a night on the town, we have to turn around and go back home to make sure that she unplugged the curling iron. The other one, I’d put in the garage because when we go somewhere together we can’t seem to remember if we shut the garage door either.  The Canary definitely makes midlife and travel a little easier.

Her way

As a tech simpleton,  if it isn’t as easy as plug in and go, more than likely I’ll never take it our of the box. Setting up my Canary was just that easy. I downloaded the app, plugged in the Canary and before I knew it I had a home security system in place. As a travel writer and co-host of Midlife Road Trip I travel often. I have a husband, a 13-year old, an elderly ailing mother and 4 rambunctious dogs at home. The Canary not only helps me monitor my home for intruders but notifies me if anything is amiss. This is especially comforting when I can’t be home. As the saying goes, it is the next best thing to being there.

I also get a kick out of watching the mischief my dogs get into in my absence. They are hilariously entertaining. And while that’s not the intended purpose of the Canary, it sure is an added perk. When I’m far away and a tad homesick, Canary is my comfort connection.

How would you use a Canary in you home?
